‘After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music’ – Aldous Huxley
Singing forms the basis for learning musical skills from Nursery onwards and from Year 2 until Year 5 class lessons include free recorder tuition for all children.
Children are offered one free taster lesson on the instrument of their choice, and tutoring, by our 13 Peripatetic staff. A huge variety of instruments are available; as well as singing we also offer piano, violin, viola, ‘cello, harp, guitar, flute, clarinet, saxophone, cornet, trumpet, trombone, French horn and drums.
Children, who learn an instrument individually, are encouraged to become part of an ensemble as soon as possible. There are free morning music clubs available for the ensembles and choirs from 08:00 – 08:30.
The ensembles, orchestras and choirs have the chance to perform on stage every term in concerts, musical productions, and the Sudbury Festival. ABRSM exams take place at the school on a termly basis and all children are encouraged to aspire to these.
In addition to these, St Margaret’s offers children the opportunity to sing every day in class, during assemblies, in the Year 3/4 Chamber Choir, the Year 5/6 Chamber Choir and the Prep Choir, the Nursery and Pre Prep Nativity plays and the whole school production which takes place each year on Speech Day.
This year the Year 5/6 Chamber Choir will be performing at the O2 Arena, London, as part of a Young Voices event!
Above all the emphasis is on every child experiencing the joy of music, regardless of their ability.
For musically gifted children, considerable attention is given to gaining music scholarships and bursaries to senior independent and public schools.
