Reception Trip to Hedingham Castle

11 October 2011

On Wednesday 28th September, Reception experienced a ‘Hands on the Past’ Day at HedinghamCastle. The theme was 'The Normans'.

The first activity was watching the Musician in the Great Hall. He played many instruments at the same time. He entertained the ‘Nobles’. He played recorders, bagpipes and the Hurdy Gurdy for us. The next activity was trying on the different Norman hats. Some were Noble hats and others were peasants'!!

It was then down to the dark, scary dungeon. We looked at armour, swords, shields, lances and bows and arrows. Did you know that the arrows were made from swans' feathers?  Our next activity was meeting a monk who was also a knight. If you were ill he tried to make you better and if you were naughty he made you say some prayers and sent you off on a pilgrimage. We were also told a story from the story teller. In the sunshine, we then had our delicious picnic made by the kitchen staff.

After lunch, we then looked at food the richer and poorer people ate. The rich ate brown bread, rabbits and cream where as the poor ate nuts, brown bread and left overs given by the rich. To end the day, we all had a go at jousting with our lances. Mrs. Mulligan and Mrs. Laurie had a rematch. Mrs. Laurie won this year – one all! The day was extremely successful and enjoyed by all.

We would like to thank the Parents who helped us on the day.
