Nursery visit from St John Ambulance

14 October 2011

St. John Ambulance Visit…

Kim, from St John Ambulance, visited us on Wednesday 12th October.  She showed the children the equipment that she keeps in her first aid kit and shared out protective gloves, plasters and bandages for the children to explore and look at.  Kim explained that as well as ambulances, the St John Ambulance have an emergency car.  The car was also brought to school… the children looked around it; saw the equipment kept inside; listened to the sirens, saw the lights flashing and also had the opportunity to sit inside the car.

Reflection…

We have been talking with the children about people in our community who help us.  This week we set up a
‘hospital’ in the classroom.  Numeracy and literacy have been incorporated by the use of signs and numbers on
the ‘medicine’ bottles.

The children have been choosing roles to play and have been interacting with each other in the hospital…

Aoife: “You are all better now.” (to KM)
Teddy: “I need some more medicine.”
Alex: “May I have this bottle of medicine?”
Mikey: “I’ve got two on my legs (bandages) and one on my head!”
Teddy: “There’s a number on there.” (looking at medicine bottles)
Mikey: “I’m actually feeling better, doctor.” (to JB)
Aoife: “She got a mark and I got to put it on.” (to KM)
Katie: “She hurt her leg.” (to AS)
James: “You’re in number two bed.” (to TH) “He needs number two medicine.”
Aoife: “Number two? I can find it.”

The children have demonstrated their understanding of what happens in hospital or at the doctors and talked
about some of the tools/resources which are needed to care for each other.  They have recognised numbers and
used them appropriately during their play.
