MUSIC
Music plays a major part in the life of St Margaret's. As well as class lessons taught throughout the school from Nursery to Year 6, free recorder lessons are given to all children from Year 2 to Year 5 as part of their class music lessons. Children are offered one free taster lesson on the instrument of their choice, and tutoring is available on violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, drums, brass instruments and singing. Children, who learn an instrument individually, are encouraged to become part of an ensemble as soon as possible. There is a wide range available to instrumentalists; Swing Band, Orchestra, Brass Ensemble, String Ensemble, Recorder Ensemble and Consort, and Rock Band. These ensembles have the chance to perform on stage every term in concerts, musical productions, and the Sudbury Festival. ABRSM exams take place at the school on a termly basis and all children are encouraged to aspire to these. In addition to these, St Margaret's offers children the opportunity to sing every day in class, during assemblies, in the Year 3/4 Chamber choir, the Year 5/6 Chamber Choir and the Prep. Choir. Above all the emphasis is on every child experiencing the joy of music, regardless of their ability. For musically gifted children, considerable attention is given to gaining music scholarships and bursaries to Senior Independent and Public Schools. Music holds no fear, only exciting challenges and ‘gives soul to the universe' - Plato.
